TROPICAL FISHING ADVENTURES

GUATEMALA

WORLD’S BEST SAILFISHING

Pez Vela is Spanish for sailfish, but for fisherman, Guatemala means the same thing. An average of over a dozen sails per boat are released there every day of the year. That figure doesn’t only apply during the peak season of December into May. That’s ALL YEAR. Imagine how good it is when things are hot. You can expect to raise a minimum of twenty sails per day. How many you convert is up to you, but typically these fish are voracious, with very few window shoppers. There have been numerous instances when boats have released 40 and more fish in a single outing, and even trips where over a hundred have been brought to the boat.

Unlike other destinations where you have to plan on being in the right place at the right time, in Guatemala there is only one place. December into May is prime time, but there are sailfish there year round, although October through November is extremely rainy. Marlin start to show up in March. The boats are all fast well equipped sportfishing boats manned by experienced crews.

Originally the fleet was based at El Capitan Marina in Puerto Iztapa, with the famed Fins n Feathers lodge next door. However, due to silting in the estuary, and the deterioration of the jetties at the inlet, all of the boats have moved to the modern Pez Vela Marina, located in the main shipping basin at Puerto Quetzal. In 2005 the "Fins n Feathers" lodge closed down, and since then there have been major changes in the Guatemalan Sportfishing world.

There are now a half dozen or so American style fishing lodges, some with their own boats and others utilizing the locally  owned boats, with more boats arriving yearly to get in on the amazing sailfishing. Besides the lodges, there is the beautiful Soleil del Pacifico Hotel, formerly the Radisson Villas del Pacifico, located on the ocean a few miles away from the marina. It is a resort hotel that mainly caters to upper class Guatemalan families, as well as Gringos looking to get in on the world class sailfishing at a more reasonable rate than that charged at the American style fishing lodges.
