TROPICAL FISHING ADVENTURES

GUATEMALA

WORLD'S BEST SAILFISHING

Pez Vela is Spanish for sailfish, but for fisherman, Guatemala means the same thing. An average of over a dozen sails per boat are released there every day of the year. That figure doesn’t only apply during the peak season of December into May. That’s ALL YEAR. Imagine how good it is when things are hot. You can expect to raise a minimum of twenty sails per day. How many you convert is up to you, but typically these fish are voracious, with very few window shoppers. There have been numerous instances when boats have released 40 and more fish in a single outing, and even trips where over a hundred have been brought to the boat.

Unlike other destinations where you have to plan on being in the right place at the right time, in Guatemala there is only one place. Originally the fleet was based at El Capitan Marina in Puerto Iztapa, with the famed Fins n Feathers lodge next door. However, due to silting in the estuary, and the deterioration of the jetties at the inlet, all of the boats have moved to the modern Pez Vela Marina, located in the main shipping basin at Puerto Quetzal. In 2005 the "Fins n Feathers" lodge closed down, and since then there have been major changes in the Guatemalan Sportfishing world.

There are now a half dozen or so American style fishing lodges, some with their own boats and others utilizing the locally  owned boats, as well as the beautiful Soleil del Pacifico Hotel,  located on the ocean a few miles away from the marina. It is a resort hotel that mainly caters to upper class Guatemalan families, as well as Gringos looking to get in on the world class sailfishing at a more reasonable rate than that charged at the American style fishing lodges

Soleil del Pacifico Hotel is located on the ocean at Chulamar, a small village about fifteen minutes away from the Marina Pez Vela, where all of Guatemala’s sportfishing boats are located. It is a resort hotel popular with upscale Guatemalan families. The accommodations are great, with both double and triple air conditioned rooms.

The Resort features 62 standard rooms, 24 mini-suites, 14 suites, 11 four people bungalows and 11 six people bungalows, all decorated in an elegant tropical style. The amenities include double beds, cable TV, radio, telephone, wardrobe, closet, balcony, safe deposit box. The suites and the bungalows are equipped with a complete kitchen and living room.
