GUATEMALA IS SAILFISHING

Year round, the boats fishing Guatemala average better than ten releases per day. During the peak season, December into May, it is even better. Twenty sailfish days don't even rate an exclamation point. Fishing action like this makes Guatemala THE best choice for the light tackle fishing or fly rod fishing fanatic. Besides these high flying acrobats there are dolphin, known in Spanish as dorado, tuna, marlin, roosterfish and snook available.

Originally the fleet was based at El Capitan Marina in Puerto Iztapa, with the famed Fins n Feathers lodge next door. However, due to silting in the estuary, and the deterioration of the jetties at the inlet, all of the boats have moved to the modern Pez Vela Marina, located in the main shipping basin at Puerto Quetzal. Anyone who has been through the ordeal of exiting the inlet will applaud this move. No more white knuckle rides throuh the massive waves caused by an outgoing tide against large Pacific swells.

SOLEIL del PACIFICO

In 2005 the famed "Fins n Feathers" lodge closed down, and since then there have been major changes in the Guatemalan Sportfishing world. There are now a half dozen or so American style fishing lodges, some with their own boats and others utilizing the privately owned boats, with more boats arriving yearly to get in on the amazing sailfishing. Besides the lodges, there is the beautiful Soleil del Pacifico Hotel, formerly the Villas del Pacifico, located on the ocean a few miles away from the marina, where all the boats are docked.

I can book fishing complete fishing packages for any operation in Guatemala, but I prefer to keep it simple. The best American style lodge is Casa Vieja, which is located in a private gated community a couple of miles from the marina. They have a selection of eight boats to choose from and can accommodate almost thirty guests at the lodge. A less expensive option is to utilize a couple of privately owned boats with lodging at the Soleil del Pacifco Hotel on the ocean, a couple of miles in the other direction from the marina.

Give me a call, and I'll be glad to set you up with the fishing adventure of a lifetime.

The Casa Vieja Lodge. opened in 2006  The new facility is located less than a mile from the entrance of Marina Pez Vela. After a day on the water you can be back in the Lodge’s pool in 5 minutes. Gone are the days of running the not-so-popular la cala de la muerte, the inlet of death, traveling through a dangerous inlet will never again be a concern for the clients. While a trip to the paradise of Casa Vieja Lodge is every bit of a 4-star luxury, the cost per release still cannot be beaten – anywhere
