GUATEMALA is SAILFISHINGYear round, the boats fishing there average better than ten releases per day. During the peak season, December into May, it is even better. Twenty sailfish days don't even rate an exclamation point. Fishing action like this makes Guatemala THE best choice for the light tackle fishing or fly rod fishing fanatic. Besides these high flying acrobats there are dolphin, known in Spanish as dorado, tuna, marlin, roosterfish and snook available.Every year it seems that more boats arrive in Guatemala to get in on its amazing sailfishing. In addition there are new lodging possibilities every year, ranging from fishing lodges to private houses to the beautiful Soleil del Pacifico (formerly Villas del Pacifico), located on the ocean a few miles away from the Pez Vela Marina, where all the boats are docked. |

SOLEIL del PACIFICO |
The majority of the locally owned Guatemalan fleet consists of 28' to 31’
Bertrams or similar. In addition there are American owned boats ranging
rom 36 to 41’. There are also a couple of pangas available, suitable for
parties of two, that are great for those who prefer fishing in a small
boat, besides being a real bargain. The pangas however do have one
drawback, and that is the inability to travel very far offshore Originally the fleet was based at El Capitan Marina in Puerto Iztapa,
with the famed Fins n Feathers lodge next door. However, silting in the
estuary, and deterioration of the jetties at the inlet required a better
alternative, and in early 2002, the fleet left Puerto Iztapa and moved
into a new marina in the ship basin at Puerto Quetzal. Those of you who
have fished Guatemala know that when conditions were wrong, going through
the inlet leaving Puerto Iztapa could be a white knuckle affair. This move
means much smoother comings and goings. In 2005 the famed "Fins n Feathers" lodge closed down. In late 2006, two new lodges were developed to take it's place, Pacific Fins and Casa Vieja. Cas Vieja has the old lodges boats and Pacific Fins has the lodge, with it's fleet lead by Capt Ron Hamlin |
