A couple of hours south of Cancun and Cozumel, on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, is probably the best place in the world to catch the "grand slam" of the flats, consisting of bonefish, permit and tarpon on the same day. Boca Paila Lagoon and Ascencion Bay are both part of the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, where commercial netting has been banned. The result is some of the world's best flats and lagoon fishing. Packages are available at Punta Allen, a picturesque fishing vilage at the entrance to Ascencion Bay, that consist of six days fishing/seven nights lodging, starting at $1899 per person, double occupancy. However, shorter stays are available as well

Another more upscale choice would be Casa Blanca lodge, situated at the southern edge of the Bay. Full week rates here start at $2700/person, based on double occupancy, but that includes the air transfer to and from the lodge and Cancun.

If you don't want to go that far from Cancun, there is some great flats fishing only forty-five minutes away. Bonefish, permit, snook, small tarpon plus a number of other species area available. A full day charter for two, including the transportation and lunch goes for $375.

Want to do some flats fishing one day and then head offshore?Cancun also has some of the best Atlantic sailfishing the world has to offer.

Starting in February the sails pile up only a dozen or so miles offshore. In past years, boats have tagged and released fifty or more fish on the better days. American boats flock to Isla Mujeres, only a beer away from Cancun, yearly to get in on the hot action. Most of these boats charter for $1000-$1200/day. there is a more reasonable choice. An American living on Isla has a couple of boats. The smaller at 29' goes for $650/day, while the larger one that he runs goes for $800/day. Both boats are perfect for light tackle or flyfishing, and since have regularly headed the leader board in the international tournaments held there.

At Cozumel, great billfishing starts around the end of March and continues into June. Sailfish, as well as white and blue marlin are available only five miles from the dock. Charters are available from $500 per day for groups up to four. Or, if you are staying at one of the newer resorts on what is called the Maya Riviera, you can fish out of Puerto Aventuras, where day charters are available from $550 to $900/day depending on the size of the boat.
