Panama's Pacific coast is very similar to Costa Rica, except that there are much fewer angling opportunities. The two most popular choices have been TROPIC STAR LODGE to the south of the canal and around Coiba Island to the north. TROPIC STAR is still the only choice in the south, but there are currently four operations near Coiba Island. Both PESCA PANAMA and the CORAL STAR operate the same as Tropic Star with fixed arrival and departure days. COIBA ADVENTURES and the BIG GAME CLUB are much more flexible, both with the number of days you can book as well as the transer days. There are other less known areas that also offer excellent fishing opportunities, although with a lot less publicity, and with less emphasis on the glamor species like billfish.

In addition to the lodges listed below there are two new operations starting up with access to the fishing areas
around Coiba Island. For information about these locations give me a call at 800 280 5565

TROPIC STAR LODGE

TROPIC STAR LODGE, as seen from the air, is one of the world's premier fishing lodges. Located over one hundred miles south of Panama City, it is the best land based operation in the country. During our winter months the black marlin fishing there is nothing short of phenomenal. In addition there are all of  the other species associated with the tropical Pacific, only in greater numbers than anywhere else. The lodge is luxurious, and  fishing is done aboard a fleet of classic 31' Bertrams. During the height of the season (December through April) only full week bookings are accepted,  running from Saturday to Saturday. After that shorter stays are available.

TROPIC STAR IS COMPLETELY BOOKED UP FOR JANUARY & FEBRUARY OF 2009. THERE
IS LIMITED AVAILABILITY FOR DECEMBER 08 & MARCH 09, AS WELL AS STARTING IN
APRIL THROUGH SEPTEMBER OF 2008

Hannibal Bank is recognized as one of the best places in the world to catch black marlin and yellowfin tuna. Though available year around, the Panamanian "summer season" which starts in December and runs through April is considered the prime time to fish for this combination. Blue marlin, Pacific sailfish and dorado are also available at this time. April is considered the best month for yellow-fin tuna. The adjacent group of islands comprised of the largest island Coiba and the smaller group of islands of Parida, Ladrones, Secas, Contreras, Canales, Jicaron, Jicarita and Montuosa offer tremendous habitat for fish and unmatched inshore fishing action.
This area is one of the best areas in the world to catch a large (35 to 50 lbs.) roosterfish. Multiple hook-ups on roosterfish are not uncommon and schools of roosterfish can be seen chasing your bait. Cubera snapper are also available here in abundance. The explosive strike of the cubera snapper inhaling a surface bait is an experience the inshore angler will remember for a lifetime. Other species such as blue trevally, jack crevelle, sierra mackerel, rainbow runners, amberjack, various tuna and a host of other species are available along with a limited quantity of snook. The unmatched inshore fishing can be enjoyed by anglers year round.
The wahoo bite is from August through December. Here anglers troll around the many tropical islands fishing for the "reel" screaming strike of the wahoo. Quadruple hook-ups happen often when schools of wahoo are located.

THE BIG GAME FISHING CLUB

The Panama Big Game Club is owned by Two Charter boat skippers from Miami, Florida that started out to build a place to fish from after retirement.

They got so excited about the location at Boca Brava, how nice they were treated by the Panamanian Government and local people and the wild fishing experience that it grew into the "CLUB".

You don't rough it here. A tropical pathway takes you to your private central air conditioned 600 square foot cottage, beautifully appointed with all the comforts of a world class lodge in a remote jungle atmosphere. These new first class cottages sleep up to six comfortably. Our anglers clubhouse features a bar, lounge and dining room with a panoramic view of the pacific Ocean and offshore Islands.
The Two owners also have had award winning seafood restaurants in Miami, Florida. The "Port of Call" seafood house and the still active "Tunas'" of North Miami Beach, Florida.

With over Thirty Years experience in the restaurant business, you will be sure each day will be a great dining experience.

COIBA ADVENTURES

Some of you may remember Club Pacifico during the 1980s. A few years after the famous lodge closed in 1988, Panama granted Spanish scientists biologists exclusive use the once fishing lodge. Panamanian Spanish researchers used the lodge as a base to study and develop plans to preserve the rich isolated bio diversity of the islands. Now that the study has been completed after six years, We’ve managed to lease cabins for you lucky fishermen to enjoy once again.

Located in the most tranquil bay in the islands, a cove with white sand beach, lined with coconut trees and backdrop of lush rainforest, the cabins offer million dollar views of small tropical islands seemingly floating out in the blue water. Cabins are spacious duplex buildings that accommodate up to three guests comfortably per each side. They are air-conditioned and we provide a back up generator to insure your comfort.

You will hear howler monkeys & parrots each morning as you walk down the beach to head out fishing. A variety of interesting wildlife passes through the grounds daily. It’s as if you are in a terrestrial aquarium full of life. You could shoot several rolls of film within 300 yards of your cabin

Coral Star

M/V Coral Star is a 115 foot mothership liveaboard that offers first-class service with a world-class fishing experience. In 1995 the M/V Coral Star traveled from the British Virgin Islands to the Pacific side of Panama where she started offering sport fishing. In 1998, Donald Perkins purchased the M/V Coral Star business. The ship was totally re-fitted and repaired. Anxious to make his business successful, Donald Perkins has promised to offer you the latest technology and the best comfort available in this incredible area.

The accommodations consist of two master staterooms with queen size beds and full bath on the main deck, two deluxe, and four standard cabins with portholes, sink and vanity, private and semi-private shower and toilet. All staterooms have individually controlled A/C, carpeting, generous storage capacity with a sufficient supply of 110 V current throughout the ship.

The full stainless steel galley on the main deck will rival any gourmet restaurant. The Coral Star's fully air-conditioned mahogany and teak interior with picture windows, entertainment center, wet bar, carpeting and spiral staircase to the ship's library provides a home-like atmosphere to dine, lounge and relax from your daily activities. The 230 ton displacement, two teak decks, carpeted sun deck with lounge chairs and the famous "Fan Tail Bar" creates a stable, comfortable and spacious area outdoors. Your days aboard the Coral Star are full of activity and fun. Besides fishing you can also go scuba diving, sea kayaking, exploring, or snorkeling from our 18 and 22-foot motor launches. Our experienced and knowledgeable captains, fleet of sportfishing boats, and complete array of equipment and tackle assure you an exciting and successful excursion!

PESCA PANAMA

COIBA EXPLORER LODGE

NEW PESCA PANAMA LODGE

In 2002, PESCA PANAMA purchased and renovated the old floating lodge that once belonged to the COIBA EXPLORER. It is now back on it's old station, anchored in a protected cove at Coiba Island.

Pesca Panama invites you to join them this year in the fishing paradise of Panama. Our newly renovated floating lodge is anchored in a remote tropical island setting where the fishing starts at your front door. Our clean, comfortable, well equipped floating lodge is owner operated and specializes in trying to meet the request of each angler.

The lodge is 70ft long X 30 ft wide. The layout consists of 3 a/c guest cabins, 3 a/c crew cabins, 2 bathrooms with h/w showers, laundry facility, galley, salon, bar and outdoor dining area.

>Other amenities include:
Twin engines, twin generators, 1400 g/p/d water maker, freezers, ice maker, shop and large tackle room. The floating lodge can accommodate 12 anglers. A cash bar is available with a limited selection. If you prefer a special brand you might want to bring it.

If you are unable to spend a whole week fishing, there are a number of other, less publicized locations, where excellent fishing is possible. Giant tarpon that have migrated through the Panama Canal, as well as snook are available in rivers on the

Pacific coast that are accessible on day trips from Panama City. It is also possible to fish the Perlas Archipelgo, with great and reef fishing as well as sailfish and occasional marlin while staying in Panama City, although a better option would be to stay at Contadora Island or at the luxurious eco-tourist lodge on San Jose Island.

If you are the adventuresome type there is excellent fishing to be had at Los Friales near Pedasi. However, the boats used are very basic, and the accommodations, while comfortable enough are far from luxurious. But this is strictly "do it yourself"

If your main interest is in grouper, snapper, roosterfish, trevally and amberjack, with a possibility of tuna and wahoo, Panama is the place to go, especially during our winter months. Don't expect to ride around in an air conditioned salon waiting for a fish to strike. Instead you will be in a small outboard, actually fishing, with a rod in your hands, for brawlers that are more likely to weigh 60 pounds than 20. It's not for everybody, but if you are a die hard bottom fisherman, this is your type of fishing.
