“As a freelance writer/photographer for Marlin, Salt Water Sportsman, Sport Fishing and other magazines, I’ve had the pleasure to fish in 18 countries and hundreds of fishing lodges. Last week I fished at Panama Sport Fishing Lodge located at Boca Chica with owner John de la Cruz and was very impressed with the operation. John is a meticulous person with a background as executive chef, restaurant owner, developer and entrepreneur and the lodge reflects his high standards. The Stamas boats are well-suited to this fishery and Captains Macho Gonzalez and Sergio Ruiz are some of the best in Panama. The lodge itself is comfortable with view rooms, plasma TV and A/C. The main lodge has a beautiful layout with pool, inside/outside dining area, bar and a very convenient pier and floating dock for boarding the gameboats without a hassle. The lodge staff are friendly and eager to please which adds to the special atmosphere. The fishing was special also with three marlin released on our boat in our two days of fishing with live black skipjack baits at Isla Montuosa and the Hannibal Bank. Macho likes to stick close to his “numbers” which obviously pays off big-time. I highly recommend the Panama Sport Fishing Lodge and I’m looking forward to a return visit myself!
