Tamarindo Beach is located in the northern part of Costa Rica known as Guanacaste, a little more than an hour by road from Liberia, the countries newest international airport. This area is being highly promoted as a tourist destination by Costa Rica, and is currently known more for it's surfing than fishing. But, it is on the southern boundary of the Papagallo winds that blow constantly from January into April, and therefore it's fleet of spotfishing boats remains there year round, unlike boats from further north that depart for calmer locations during our winter months. During that time frame you are more likely to catch a marlin here than a sailfish, but later in the season the sailfish arrive, so if you travel to Costa Rica anytime from May into September, Tamarindo should be your choice.
