Tarpon |
|
The best tarpon fishing in Costa Rica is on the northeast Caribbean coast, an area accessed only by air or boat - no roads. There are three locations, the Rio Colorado, which is the largest river, and most popular location, the Rio Parismina, a smaller river to the south and Tortuguero located halfway between the two, and famed for it's turtle nesting beach and eco tourism. Tarpon trips are typically booked as all inclusives (fishing, lodging, meals and flight) and start with an early morning flight from San Jose to start the days fishing and end by flying back to San Jose the morning after the last days fishing. |

RIO COLORADO LODGE

![]() |
The world's best tarpon and snook fishing is at Rio Colorado Lodge, built on the banks of the Colorado River, right at its mouth where it empties into the sea and where fishing is frequently the best. The whole complex is built on stilts, elevating it from the ground and is under cover, shielding it from the rain. Rooms are double roofed, providing a cooling, insulating effect for your comfort. Even the walkways and dock are roofed for your convenience. 18 comfortable rooms NOW AIR-CONDITIONED (the only East Coast lodge with air-conditioned rooms). |

All have private baths, hot showers, electric fans and daily maid service (we can also take care of your laundry). Meals are served family style, all you care to eat, and the cuisine at the Rio Colorado Lodge has earned high praise from ardent fishermen from around the world. There is a comfortable recreation room with game tables, and you'll find a new video room with satellite TV, telefax equipment, a very well stocked tackle shop and ample outdoor lounging areas, and a very interesting zoo. We have a fully stocked bar with drinks at reasonable prices. Our daily Happy Hour is from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m., when all rum drinks and soft drinks are "on the house."

Unlike the Pacific Coast, where boats are often booked based on reputations, on the Carribbean, most of the guides are employed by the various fishing lodges. The one exception is Captain Eddie Brown, and his BULL SHARK. He has been guiding at Barra del Colorado and Tortuguero for over 35 years. He is an aggressive angler who goes the extra mile to find fish, with vast experience in Costa Rican and Nicaraguan waters and, as a three-time winner of national tarpon tournaments, Eddie will get you to where the tarpon are. The Bull Shark is a 22-foot custom open fisherman with T-top, full electronics. All tackle, lures and drinks are provided. Three days of fishing with Eddie, including meals and lodging will cost you $1350/person, based on double occupancy. Not included is the transfer between San Jose and the Caribbean Coast, and that can be done by air ($135/person), or a combination of ground and water transfers. |
